2019 - I am not currently teaching watercolour painting.
Thank you to everyone who came to classes over the last several years. You helped make my art career possible, kept me on my toes, and left me with many happy memories.
If I arrange one off / weekend workshops in the future, I will update this page and email
all of my subscribers with the details.
2018 - Watercolour Art Classes, Demonstrations and Workshops
I lead regular week day classes and weekend workshops around Auckland. I am also available to give demonstrations and lead workshops for art groups and other interested parties throughout New Zealand and abroad.
Please get in touch to enquire about existing workshop availability, or to arrange something new. My step by step instruction and flexible approach results in classes that are suitable for you whether you are a complete beginner or a seasoned painter.
Term 4 2018 - Weekly Classes at the Franklin Arts Centre - Fully Booked
(12 Massey Ave, Pukekohe, ask at the Gallery to be shown to the Weta Workshop)
-
Tuesday 10am- 1pm, 30th October - 11th Dec $220
Note - each term we will try and arrange one day painting outdoors. Please see here for a write up after a previous plein air session, and some tips for getting organised. We all had such a good time we decided to try to arrange one outdoor session each term).
Weekly classes are structured so that each term covers numerous topics such as: colour mixing, colour theory, composition and design, techniques, materials, and subject choice. I bring reference material for some classes and take the class through a painting. Other classes are student led, and everyone works on material they have selected. Once a term everyone brings flowers for a floral workshop. Classes are fun, supportive and encouraging, and we cover a wide range of skills and subject matter.
Weekend Workshops - Bookings now open:
(All Saturday / Sunday Workshops run from 10am - 3pm)
-
Sunday 25th November - Uxbridge Arts Centre, Howick - Contemporary Flowers. Last workshop for 2018.
Most Workshops are $95 for the day. Some are run by other organisations and there are small variations in price.
You can contact me directly to book into my workshops, and where applicable I will forward your email to the appropriate organisation hosting the class.
Materials:
-
If you are new to watercolour, and looking to purchase materials, I have put together some information and a suggested list here, with a printable list here.
-
If you are attending one of my Contemporary Floral workshops, you may want to add some pinks to the list. Purples and greens are easy and fun to mix, pinks are not! (If you are mad about pink, and interested in materials, check this out!)
-
If you are just starting out and have no materials, I can put a selection together for you to use on the day for $40, and can then help you with the details of what you may want to purchase so you can carry on painting. Please give me a few days notice is this is what you would like to do.
For an idea of how the contemporary floral workshops run, have a look at this blog post from a previous session. If you are booked into a Floral class, please bring along some flowers to paint!

Teaching in 2018
I am available to take week day and weekend workshops in Auckland, throughout New Zealand and abroad.
I currently teache regular classes from the Franklin Arts Centre, and weekend workshops in venues in Ponsonby, Mt Roskill, Howick and Manurewa.
I am available to to give demonstrations, and have provided these to several art groups in the past, including the Fellowship of Artists, Auckland Watercolour Society, Mangere Bridge Art Group, Papakura Art Group, Howick Art Group, and to school groups.
My instruction covers all aspects of watercolour painting, such as materials, (including new products) technique, composition and colour theory.
I also take private classes in New Zealand and abroad, and am sometimes available to judge shows and exhibitions.
What to Expect
My classes can accommodate a range of skills, from beginner to experienced painters. My step by step demonstrations and instruction provide participants with a wide selection of techniques and skills to put into practise on the day.
If you are interested in arranging a new class I will work with you to develop the class or workshop appropriate to the needs of the participants.
A materials list will be provided for all classes.
Testimonials
'Absolutely loved your art class today and congratulations once again for your clear instruction and wonderful demonstration for a successful day of teaching,........you do manage to draw out amazing results from your students with varying levels of experience' - Di
'Thank you so much for the fantastic lesson today! It was such a challenge to do an urban scene and one I might have put off for another day if left to myself, but it was well worth it with your inspiring teaching. I am so pleased with having tackled something different, and having learnt more again. I like the way you encourage everyone to use the photograph as the beginning, and alter and rearrange things to suit our own picture including choosing colours. You take the scariness out of it!' - Caroline
'I've been to several of Claudia's classes and I am very impressed with her personable, informative and educational style of teaching. She is generous with her knowledge and is always approachable. She creates a very pleasant class atmosphere and of course it's wonderful to see her paint' - Sharon
'I loved this and learnt so much. Experienced so much, now my mind and imagination will not close down. Fabulous Teacher' - Allison
'I have been attending a water colour painting course with Claudia Slaney at the Franklin Arts Centre. My painting has improved because of her ability to explain and demonstrate how best to use water color paints and achieve the best outcome.
Everyone in the class has a different interpretation of the subject chosen which Claudia encourages so the end results are all very different' - Louise
'I enjoyed my last workshop with Claudia at the The New Zealand Fellowship of Artists so much that I have begun another workshop with her. She is a fabulous teacher, I like her style which is informative and relaxed, and her demonstrations are easy to follow and provide lots of hints and tips - I highly recommend Claudias workshops, they will improve your watercolour skills' - Jude
"I loved your class today especially your calm and confident approach and your positive comments which are so helpful and encouraging' - Margie
'Since seeing them for the first time I’ve been drawn to Claudia’s paintings which often have a dreamlike and elusive atmosphere. I’m familiar with many of her landscape subjects and love her approach. Even busy city streets exhibit this otherworldly mood.
Watercolour art like Claudia’s inspire me to try and learn the craft myself' - anon.
'Hi Claudia, just want to say what an enjoyable time I am having at your workshop. Your teaching style is relaxed and kind, so that one does not feel self-conscious about producing one’s meagre effort.
Your style is delightful to try to follow and your tips on tackling water colour painting extremely worthwhile.
Thank you for being so generous with your time, encouragement, and painting
ideas' - Piri
'I did enjoy your Saturday class. It seemed an intimidating subject but it worked well. Such a range of talent there too. I think everyone got a lot out of the course, ranging from beginners like me to the experienced - it was good to have a step by step demo before we set to. It was interesting to see the different end results from artists starting with the same resource.
You managed to make contact at all levels and gave something to everyone there.
I learned a lot and enjoyed the experience' - Mary
'The workshop day last Saturday was a most enjoyable day. It was lovely to meet you, and the other participants. You explained and demonstrated the techniques very clearly, making it interesting and instructive. Now to practice lots!' - Roseanne
'I really enjoyed your class on Saturday, You have such a lovely enthusiastic friendly personality and I learned such a lot from your class. I have been practicing since and have had a couple of EURIKA !! moments.
I watch quite a lot of tutorials on the internet but I think to be with the artist gives so much more feeling to the subject. I mean, how could you turn a dull misty morning into a magical moody mysterious one. You inspired me to add some colour and imagination rather than replicating what is in a photo.
Thank you for sharing your talent.
I would love to attend your next classes' - Anthea
'I was lucky enough to go to Claudia's watercolour one day workshop recently in Franklin.
I went alone but the class was friendly and we shared good coffee and food at the nearby cafe (an unexpected bonus!)
Claudia set a relaxed and friendly tone to the class and her style is loose and expressive, which I really enjoy.
She made the learning very easy and accessable and I was thrilled with my painting.
I highly recommend a days workshop with Claudia' - Naomi
'Hi Claudia,Thanks very much for a wonderful lesson yesterday. I learnt so much essential information and in following you step by step, and in realising I have much to learn! It has really opened up watercolour work for me, seeing how to approach it from start to finish. You are a wonderful teacher and I enjoyed the whole day, all painting together' - Caroline
